Ms. Shila Neupane stepping forward to create awareness campaign about  Cyber Crime & Cyber violence in Nepal

Data from Nepal’s Cyber Bureau shows that in the fiscal year 2022-23, a total of 9,013 cybercrime cases were reported. Out of these, 1,835 were related to online fraud, accounting for 20.35 percent of the total cases. In 2023-24, the number more than doubled, skyrocketing to 19,730. The surge in online fraud cases is equally concerning, with 4,112 cases registered, making up 20.84 percent of the total.

The data reflects an alarming trend that shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, the current fiscal year 2024-25 has already seen 2,100 cases registered within the first month. And on the face of it, Nepal appears critically ill-prepared to tackle the growing challenges of cyber threats

Cyber threats: Nepal has seen a rise in cyber threats, including data breaches, ransomware attacks, phishing scams, and identity theft.

Cybersecurity infrastructure: While Nepal’s cyber infrastructure has improved, many organizations lack strong security protocols.

Cybersecurity awareness: Users often lack awareness of cybersecurity best practices.

Legal framework: The legal framework for addressing cybercrimes is still developing.

Law enforcement: Law enforcement agencies need more resources and training to tackle cybercrime.

The country’s cyber infrastructure, while improving, still faces several challenges. Many organizations lack robust security protocols, and there is often insufficient awareness about cybersecurity best practices among users.
