An astrologer is a person who practices astrology and interprets astrological charts. Modern astrology, however, occupies a different position from astronomy. Astronomy is a scientific discipline concerned with the observation and physical study of celestial objects and phenomena. Astrology interprets celestial positions as having meaning for human personality or events. The American Psychological Association’s Dictionary of Psychology describes astrology as a pseudoscience and notes that there is no scientific evidence supporting the belief that horoscope positions determine personal characteristics or life outcomes.
This distinction is important when reading horoscopes or consulting an astrologer. Astrological interpretations can have cultural, historical, spiritual or personal significance for people, but claims about predicting events or determining personality should not be confused with conclusions established through scientific research. Scientific claims require evidence and appropriate research methods, rather than relying solely on tradition or personal experience.
Despite the scientific debate surrounding its claims, astrology continues to attract public interest. Horoscopes are widely encountered in newspapers, websites, mobile applications and social-media content, while professional and traditional astrologers continue to offer chart interpretations and consultations.
Understanding astrology therefore involves looking at several connected concepts: astrology as the broader belief system, the horoscope as a chart or interpretation, the astrologer as its practitioner, and the astrologist as an alternative term sometimes used for someone who studies or practices astrology. Together, these concepts explain why astrology remains a visible part of popular culture while occupying a different position from modern scientific astronomy.
